MIAMI TWP. — Despite opposition, Miami Twp. trustees voted 2-1 Tuesday night to pay contractors $647,000 to develop a waterfall welcome sign, pond and park around a retention basin behind a new Menards store and township government offices.
When work is complete, westbound motorists on Interstate 675 will pass a lighted sign decorated by a cascading waterfall.
The pond and park will be designed around a drainage basin serving the store. which is under construction at Lyons Road and Ohio 741. It will also serve a bus terminal, library and government offices around the corner on Lyons.
Landform, a landscape designer in Fairfield in Butler County, will manage the project, featuring the waterfall to be designed by Meyer Aquascapes, located in Harrison, outside Cincinnati.
Money from a special taxing district established around the mall would pay for the development, including a gazebo and walkway, behind the new $9 million store.
“It’s not going to cost our citizens,” Trustee Charles Lewis said.
Trustee Deborah Preston voted against the project which she said would divert public funds that would otherwise help fund township services or other projects.
“That’s money all our departments would otherwise get,” Preston said.
The proposal follows suggestions from citizens to erect welcome signs at key entry ways into the 21-square-mile township.
