WASHINGTON TWP., Montgomery County — The Miami Valley School will be presenting the nation’s first authorized high school production of “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog,” an Internet sensation that stormed to the top DVD spot on Amazon.com and led to Time magazine naming it one of the top 50 Inventions of 2008.

The production, which hits the school’s stage May 7 through 9, is a musical series initially produced exclusively for the Web.

The story follows the comical journey of an aspiring super villain and stars Neil Patrick Harris in the title role, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day. The original film version was produced in the midst of the Writer’s Guild of America’s strike of 2007-8, and later became a viral Internet sensation through video Web sites such as YouTube and Hulu.

Once word of the MVS production became public, cyberspace exploded with buzz around the students’ commitment to producing a live stage production of the unique musical. “Props to the Miami Valley School,” wrote Dr. Horrible’s creators on the show’s twitter site, hosting more than 23,000 dedicated fans.

“We are always looking for a new, cutting-edge production to host at MVS,” said upper school music director and play director Ross Williams. “This show’s it,” he said, noting that the show, which has won People’s Choice and Hugo Awards, is the first to have the blessings of the show’s creators.

Students approached Williams with the idea of producing a stage version of the show as part of the spring production of the MVS performing arts program. After securing permission from the film’s creators, students watched more than 80 hours of the video to transcribe the film and create the stage play.

Last fall, the school staged a student-directed production of the Georg Buchner classic Woyzek. In recent years, MVS staged a series of Shakespeare plays, including a production of Romeo and Juliet with the original 16th century dialogue.

MVS alumni include Emmy-award winner Allison Janney, Obie/AUDELCO award-winning director Talvin Wilks, documentary filmmaker Claudia Levin, actress Tori Ross and film industry executive Richard Taylor among others.

Tickets for the MVS Dr. Horrible production are available by calling (937) 434-4444 or emailing ross.williams@mvschool.com. Performances are scheduled for Thursday, May 7 at 7 p.m., Friday, May 8 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 9 at 2 and 8 p.m.

The Miami Valley School is located in Washington Twp. and serves students from early childhood to twelfth grade from 34 surrounding communities.
