MIDDLETOWN — Students at Amanda Elementary School will be getting a lesson on school bus and pedestrian safety today after a 7-year-old was struck by a car Monday, Feb. 1.
Middletown police said Shawn Austin McQuinn, a second-grader at Amanda Elementary School, was hit around 4 p.m. by a black Pontiac Grand Prix after darting between two vehicles going east and into the path of the car headed west on Oxford State Road. He was flown by medical helicopter to Children’s Medical Center of Dayton.
On Tuesday morning, Feb. 2, McQuinn was listed in good condition.
The 7-year-old and two other boys were about 250 feet from the school and the school crossing guard when the accident occurred near 1408 Oxford State Road, police said.
The extent of the boy’s injuries were unclear; however, his grandmother, who did not give her name, said the boy said he couldn’t feel his legs.
The boy reportedly temporarily lost consciousness after he was struck, but was alert while being treated by paramedics.
Kayla Weber of Hamilton, who was driving the car that struck the boy, was crying and being consoled by friends at the scene. Police said she does not face any charges.
“They just took off and ran out in the middle of the road,” Weber said. “The car in front of me swerved and missed (him). When he swerved, I slammed on my breaks and hit him.”
Weber, who was headed home from work, said she was driving west on Oxford State Road at about 20 mph in the 35 mph zone when she struck the child.
She said she immediately called 911 from her cell phone, knelt down beside the boy and asked if he was OK.
“He just started crying,” Weber said. “I’m freaked out right now ... I hope to God he’s OK.”
A medical helicopter landed on the property of the Sacred Dwelling Place, a nearby Pentecostal church. Police said the boy’s injuries did not appear life-threatening, and the helicopter left with the boy at about 4:30 p.m.
No charges will be filed against Weber. Police Lt. Walter Scott Reeve said the boys were crossing the street outside of a designated crosswalk.
Two assemblies will be conducted for Amanda Elementary children today to review school bus and pedestrian traffic safety.
A Middletown patrol officer also will be assigned to the area to make sure children use the crosswalk.
