TROY — A Piqua woman pleaded not guilty to a felony child endangering indictment in the September death of her five-month-old daughter.
Tiffani Cantrell, 23, is accused of rolling over on the child, who was sleeping in bed with her, Jim Bennett, first assistant Miami County prosecutor, said Tuesday, April 7.
Piqua police were called to Cantrell’s residence at 8:45 a.m. Sept. 29 on a report of a child not breathing, Chief Bruce Jamison said. Keandra Cantrell was taken to Upper Valley Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Jamison said information in the case was turned over to the prosecutor’s office. He declined further comment on details surrounding the death. Bennett said the results of the investigation were presented to a grand jury recently.
The indictment alleges Cantrell, as a parent or guardian, “did create a substantial risk to the health and safety of the child, by violating a duty of care, protection or support, resulting in serious physical harm to the child.”
Cantrell pleaded not guilty Monday in Common Pleas Court. She is free on a recognizance bond. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for April 20.
The charge is a third-degree felony, which carries a possible sentence of up to five years in prison.
