The number of serious injury accidents this year on Interstate 675 already has surpassed the total for 2009 and quadrupled that for 2008, according to a review of traffic crash records.

While I-675 has yet to see a fatal crash this year, records reviewed by the Dayton Daily News show there are several trouble spots along the 26.5-mile highway.

There were three serious crashes, including one fatality, at mile post 9 near Indian Ripple Road between August 2008 and July 30, 2010, records show. Multiple injury accidents, including several fatalities, also occurred near mile post 3 and the interchanges with U.S. 35, Ohio 235 and Dayton-Yellow Springs Road for the period from January 2007 to July 30, 2010.

“We are working diligently at reducing those crash numbers,” said Lt. Marty Fellure of the Xenia post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Average daily traffic on I-675 in Greene County ranges from 35,860 vehicles near Ohio 844 to 75,640 vehicles near U.S. 35, according to 2008 Ohio Department of Transportation figures, the most recent available.

The section near U.S. 35 has seen one fatal crash and two injury accidents since 2007. “Considering the volume, that’s a safe roadway,” said Beavercreek Police Sgt. Jim Wuebben.

Traffic on area highways will be heavy this Labor Day weekend as more motorists than last year are expected to travel, according to AAA. During the 2009 Labor Day weekend, there were 2,742 accidents on Ohio roads, resulting in 1,272 injuries and 20 deaths, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation. There also were 115 motorcycle crashes that led to 101 injuries and 20 deaths.

More than 10,000 law enforcement agencies, including 2,400 in the Midwest, will participate in a nationwide crackdown on impaired driving through Monday, Sept. 6, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
