OAKWOOD — The city of Oakwood, in a move that could make it a key recreation destination in the Dayton area, has unveiled preliminary plans to substantially upgrade its parks and recreational offerings.
The proposals include creating a dog park at Creager Field; providing more space for activities or parking at Oakwood Community Center; and enhancing Old River Athletic Fields, near the former NCR headquarters, to become a major soccer venue, with an oval track, synthetic turf field and other athletic facilities.
The proposal comes at a time when Fairborn, Huber Heights and Moraine are closing their municipal pools and reducing their recreation staffs because of budget constraints.
But Oakwood city officials caution that the proposals are preliminary suggestions recommended by a 25-member citizens committee and do not have a price tag attached.
The timetable to act on the recommendations is during the next five to 10 years and will require City Council approval. So far, nothing is set in stone.
“We have heard repeatedly from many citizens over the years that we need to develop better city facilities for athletic and recreation needs,” Oakwood City Manager Norbert Klopsch said.
