WEST CARROLLTON — State legislators from the Dayton region are reaching out to the Appleton paper company and its employees, after the company’s announcement that it will shut down the majority of its operations in West Carrollton.
Appleton said on Thursday that it will eliminate about 330 jobs by closing its paper-making operation at 1030 W. Alex-Bell Rd., leaving about 100 workers to run a thermal paper coating operation. Appleton said it is expanding a paper supply agreement with Canadian manufacturer Domtar, which can provide the paper more cheaply than Appleton can produce it in West Carrollton.
State Rep. Jim Butler, R-Oakwood, and state Sen. Peggy Lehner, R-Kettering, said they will help the workers losing their jobs to get access to unemployment benefits, job training and help finding new positions.
State officials are willing to do what is needed to help Appleton’s future operations in Ohio, Butler and Lehner said.
“Our primary concern at this point is addressing the needs of those who are losing their jobs with Appleton,” the legislators said in a joint statement. “This news comes as a shock to our area, and we are saddened for the employees and families who are affected by this decision.”
