PIKE TWP. — A woman who was killed in a fatal crash early Thursday morning was known throughout the region as an icon as an agricultural broadcaster.
Lindsay Hill, 31, of DeGraff was killed in a two-vehicle accident this morning when her truck rolled onto its side and struck a traffic light pole.
Authorities said Hill, of 11129 County Road 77, was killed in the crash shortly before 8 a.m. at the intersection of Ohio Routes 41 and 235.
James A. Leighty, 28, of 11723 Christiansburg-Jackson Road, St. Paris, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Hill was only the third Ohioan to serve as the president of the National Association of Farm Broadcasts, said Joe Cornely, spokesman for the Ohio Farm Bureau.
Cornely, who knew Hill for several years, said she was a longtime advocate for Ohio agriculture.
“It wasn’t just a job to her,” Cornely said. “She thoroughly enjoyed what she was doing. She genuinely loved this industry.”
Lt. Matt Cleaveland, of the Springfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, said Hill’s Ford F150 pickup was headed east on Ohio 41 while Leighty’s 2003 Mazda Tribute was headed south on Ohio 235. Cleaveland said it was not yet clear who was at fault, but one of the vehicles appears to have run a red light, causing a crash at the intersection.
The crash’s impact forced pickup’s cab against a light pole, scattering debris across the area as the truck lay on its side.
Area drivers were waved away from the scene at the intersection.
After an initial investigation, Cleaveland said it does not appear the vehicles were speeding, and drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and the crash is still under investigation.
