Positive news for the European economy has helped push Dayton-area gas prices higher in recent days, according to gasoline price analysts.

Retail gas prices in the Dayton area jumped more than 30 cents this week, according to DaytonGasPrices.com.

Oil prices have been creeping upward from a low of $75 per barrel two weeks ago to nearly $85 per barrel Thursday, said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com. Gas stations are raising their prices in response to higher costs, he said.

News that French and German leaders intend to solve Greece’s debt problems and have agreed to recapitalize European banks is pushing global markets higher, DeHaan said.

The average local retail price of gas on Thursday afternoon was $3.40 per gallon, up from $3.29 per gallon on Wednesday. The average national retail price of gas Thursday was $3.46.

The lowest retail gas price in the Miami Valley region Thursday was $3.11 per gallon at a Murphy USA station in Xenia.

The highest retail gas price was $3.45 per gallon at multiple stations in the Dayton area.
