DAYTON — American Municipal Power, a utility that supplies power to a number of Miami Valley cities and villages, will close its coal-fired power plant near Marietta by Dec. 31, 2012, under a proposed settlement of Clean Air Act violations with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Justice Department.

The agencies said Tuesday, May 18, that AMP will pay a $850,000 penalty and spend $15 million on an energy efficiency project that will provide lighting, refrigerator replacement and removal, and installation of heating and cooling to municipalities and customers served by the Richard H. Gorsuch Station, the EPA said.

AMP members include Arcanum, Celina, Lebanon, Minster, New Bremen, New Knoxville, Piqua, South Vienna, St. Marys, Tipp City, Wapakoneta, and Yellow Springs.

The settlement requires federal court approval.
