EATON — Preble County health officials have cancelled two upcoming H1N1 flu clinics because they nearly exhausted vaccine supplies at a clinic Tuesday, Health Commissioner Melissa Wallace said Wednesday, Oct. 28.
Wallace said the cancelled clinics were scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 29, and Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the Eaton First Church of God, 601 E. Lexington Road. A clinic scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 5, is still planned, she said.
Tuesday’s clinic from noon to 3 p.m. and 4-7 p.m. at the church “went very well,” Wallace said, with 1,575 people in high-risk categories receiving either the FluMist nasal spray vaccine or the shot.
“We had lines of up to 500 people at times,” Wallace said. “The wait times were anywhere from 20 minutes to two-and-a-half hours. We didn’t have to turn anybody away who was eligible.”
About two-thirds of those receiving the vaccine were children, Wallace said. About 30 public health officials and volunteers helped with the clinic, she added.
Wallace said residents interested in receiving the vaccine should visit the health department’s Web site, www.pcghd.net, and pre-register for the vaccine, which helps expedite the process at the clinics.
High-risk groups remain a priority. They include:
• pregnant woman
• people who live with or care for children younger than 6 months
• health care and emergency medical service personnel
• persons between the age of 6 months and 24 years
• people ages 25 to 64 who have chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems.
