A rally to stop the sale of guns in the community in the wake of 15-year-old Ronika Owens-Clemons’ shooting death will be outside Bill Goodman’s Gun & Knife Show at Hara Arena on Saturday, June 26.
A photo of the girl appears on a flier for the 10 a.m. event that will be near the 1001 Shiloh Springs Road complex in Trotwood.
Owens-Clemons, who was buried Thursday, died June 16 at Miami Valley Hospital from a single gunshot wound.
A 16-year-old boy is charged with delinquency by reason of homicide and might face adult charges that could put in him prison for the rest of his life if he’s convicted.
Police are investigating how the teen got the gun, but Dayton police Lt. Patrick Welch said there is no evidence it came from a local gun show.
The message of Saturday’s planned “peaceful protest with signs” is aimed at Hara for bringing the gun show into the community several times a year, said Donald Domineck, chairman of the Freedom Project, an outreach ministry of the Ethan Temple Seventh-day Adventist Church on Shiloh Springs Road.
“The problem is a lot of guns end up in the hands of misguided youth,” he said. “That’s the tragic part. The kids have such easy access to these weapons.”
Police said the teen who shot Ronika had been showing off the handgun that day. There was some sort of confrontation with another juvenile, and the 16-year-old pulled the weapon from his pocket, according to witnesses. It discharged, striking the girl, who was standing next to the teen.
