A chimney fire in a Shelby County home with an adjacent dog kennel in a separate structure turned into a blaze that caused a collapsed roof that possibly injured two firefighters.
Volunteer firefighters from the Shelby County Fire Department and outfits from Port Jefferson and Fletcher responded to the report of a fire at about 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 30, at a house at 18845 McClosky School Road in Port Jefferson, near Sidney. The address also operates Amos Kennels, according to the kennel Web site.
A Shelby County dispatch supervisor said the kennel is housed in a separate structure and that “the animals are not in danger.”
The fire burned enough, however, that a collapse caused possible injury to two firefighters, who were being examined by officials at the scene. The dispatch supervisor said one person was transported to a local hospital, but he did not know if it was a firefighter, resident or otherwise.
The fire was reported contained at about 11:20 p.m., the supervisor said.
