DAYTON — Despite a grand jury investigation, members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s national executive board gave their full support to the Rev. Raleigh Trammell and national Treasurer Spiver Gordon on Thursday, Feb. 25.
Trammell stood in a foyer to the side as Gordon and eight other board members of the national civil rights group held a news conference to respond to allegations of financial impropriety against Trammell and Gordon.
“To date also I can report to you that we have thus far seen no evidence of any misuse or unauthorized use of SCLC funds or any other funds for that matter,” said Randy Johnson of Illinois, a member of the SCLC finance committee.
The executive board represents a fraction of the full board, which totaled 44 in January.
Executive board members said the group will cooperate with all investigators, including the FBI, and requests for documents from a Fulton County, Ga., grand jury that is expected to meet today.
The Dayton Daily News has learned that SCLC members were asked to turn over to the grand jury financial documents including bank records, travel and reimbursement vouchers, and other paperwork dating to 2005. The grand jury is seeking documents submitted by eight members. They include Gordon; Trammell, who is also Dayton SCLC chairman; the Rev. Wilburt Shanklin, national compliance officer for SCLC and president of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance in Dayton; and Trammell’s daughter Cheryl Spencer, a member of the national board and an employee of Montgomery County Children Services.
Trammell said he had heard about the grand jury proceedings but that he could not comment on the multiple investigations targeting him and the SCLC.
No charges have been filed in connection with the probe, which included a Feb. 11 FBI raid on SCLC headquarters and the homes of Trammell and his daughter, Angela Goodwine.
