Still no arrest in pizza delivery driver beating

DAYTON — The owner of the Donato’s Pizza restaurant whose driver was severely beaten in a robbery Sunday night, said he and the driver’s co-workers have two priorities.

“The main thing I’m concerned about is him getting better and his family getting through this,” said restaurant owner Todd Rogers. “We’d also like to see the people who did this behind bars.”

A report from the police department identifies the driver as Yeung W. Ng, 66, of Dayton. Police said he was in critical condition when he was taken to the hospital Sunday night. No information on his current condition was available Tuesday morning.

Police are continuing to search for four suspects who allegedly ordered a pizza from a vacant house and then assaulted the driver who arrived to deliver the pie before they took his car.

Dayton police were dispatched to a vacant residence in the 300 block of Rockwood Avenue at 12:40 a.m. on Monday, July 27.

Employees at Donato’s Pizza, 1805 N. Main St., told officers their driver left the restaurant about 11 p.m. Sunday for three deliveries and had not returned, police Lt. Brian Johns said.

The Rockwood Avenue address was the third on the list, Johns said. Police found the driver in the house severely beaten.

He suffered injuries to the head and face and his pockets were turned inside out, Johns said.

Johns said the man was taken to Miami Valley Hospital in critical condition, but a hospital spokeswoman Tuesday said Miami Valley had no record of a patient under Ng’s name.

Rogers declined to talk about Ng’s background or about how long the man had been delivering pizzas for Donato’s.

Witnesses told police they saw four black males in their late teens or early 20s run from the house and drive off in a silver Kia, in which the driver had arrived, Johns said.

Police recovered the Kia about 1 p.m. Monday in the 2200 block of Emerson Avenue, but have not taken anyone into custody for the assault or theft, Johns said.

The car was to be processed for fingerprints by evidence technicians.
