DAYTON – Two young women moving into their first apartment say they’ll be back living with their parents awhile longer following a fire Thursday, Dec. 3.
Dayton Fire Department East District Chief Ron Fleming said a stove knob was likely in an on position when Dayton Power and Light Co. started the electric service to the women’s apartment, igniting moving boxes sitting on top.
Deborah Jones, 18, and Jessica Jones, 19, who are not related, were carting more items to the apartment at 87B Baltimore St. when they arrived to find fire trucks at the scene about 11 a.m. The electric had been off throughout their move that began on Tuesday. The two planned to spend their first night in the second-floor apartment tonight after the electricity was turned on.
“We just bought all kinds of new stuff and everything is ruined: clothes, shoes, dishes,” said Deborah Jones.
There were no injuries reported among the five residences in the three-story house. Fleming said the women’s kitchen was destroyed and the top and other second floor apartment sustained smoke damage. Fleming estimated damage at $10,000.
