DAYTON — You might save a life by donating blood at the Community Blood Center this summer, but you also might win a pair of Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
The blood center’s “Live to Ride. Live to Give.” blood drive kicked off Monday, July 5, and runs through Labor Day, Sept. 4. Those who register to donate at any blood center branch will get a T-shirt and be entered to win two Harley-Davidsons the center purchased from Gover Harley-Davidson in Piqua.
“Last summer we had the Honda Civic give-away and this summer we decided to do something along those lines because summer’s such a hard time to get donors in,” said Shelby Quinlivan, blood center spokeswoman.
The blood center calls the motorcycles, both Sportsters, “his and hers.” One is an orange and black 2009 XL 1200 Nightster; the other is a 2010 XL Iron 883, black denim in color. They have a combined value of $18,000.
Greg Foughty, Gover’s operations manager, said each has a 5-speed transmission and a seat height of 25.3 inches. “They’re both good beginner’s bikes,” Foughty said.
The bikes were displayed Monday at the blood center’s headquarters, 349 S. Main St., but now they’re back at Gover’s, 1501 E. Ash St. (U.S. 36). Foughty said the store, a longtime blood center supporter, will host a blood drive and customer appreciation open house July 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Quinlivan said the current blood supply is healthy, but donations have been down since summer began. “All types are necessary to keep a healthy blood supply, especially O negative, the universal blood type,” she said.
The winner of the bikes will be selected on or about Sept. 16 from 10 randomly drawn finalists. For more, visit www.givingblood.org
