A group protesting what they call “runaway government spending” will hold an Income Tax Day Tea Party rally at Dayton’s Courthouse Square.
Members of the grassroots and nonpartisan group, The Dayton Tea Party, say the event is modeled after the Boston Tea Party tax protest of 1773.
“People are disgusted and sick with what is going on in government right now and the amount of money being spent by our current administration and the past administration,” Rob Scott, a co-organizer of the event said. “This is not a Republican thing. It’s an American thing.”
The Dayton event runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15.
Scott and co-organizer of the tea party, Perry Reynolds are both University of Dayton law students. Their initial goal was to attract 1,500 like minds to the rally. As of Friday, April 10, some 5,000 residents of the Dayton region had registered online to attend the event.
Scott said this will be a peaceful rally. Family and children are welcome as are people who don’t agree.
“Everyone is welcome to come and listen to what we have to say,” Scott said.
At least 20 tea party rallies are planned around Ohio, including events in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati. Organizers say over 300 different protests will take place across the country.
Participants hope to pressure the United States Congress to repeal the federal stimulus package, draw attention to the need for fiscal restraint, support for the free market and small business, and respect for the Constitution.
