WEST MILTON — A Milton-Union teacher and soccer coach charged with contributing to the delinquency or unruliness of a minor for what police call inappropriate text messaging to a 17-year-old resigned Wednesday, June 3, Milton-Union Superintendent Ginny Rammel said.
Manuel A. Perez, 42, of Fletcher was charged after the girl’s parents contacted the Miami County Sheriff’s Office last week about the text messaging.
Authorities reviewed cell phone records and “several hundred” messages, dating back to February, Capt. Dave Duchak said. The messages “were inappropriate for a student-teacher relationship,” he said.
Perez will be arraigned June 17 in county Juvenile Court. The charge is being handled in a juvenile court because the court, under state law, has jurisdiction in contributing to the delinquency of a minor cases.
Rammel said Perez, who had been on leave, submitted a written resignation.
He has been a teacher with the district since the 2003-04 school year and was to begin coaching girls soccer in the fall, she said. Before teaching a Milton-Union High School, Perez was a boys soccer coach at the Miami East schools.
Rammel said she could not comment further.
“The safety of our kids is first,” she said.
