A 2-year-old toddler died early Tuesday, July 7, from injuries suffered when he and his father fell off an ATV they were riding.

Emergency crews were called to 9711 Wilson Road, Wayne Twp., about 6 p.m. Monday on a report of an ATV accident, according to the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, which has not released details of its investigation.

The office did state that Ryan Jones, 29, of that address, and his son, Levi, were the victims and that neither was wearing a helmet.

Levi was taken by helicopter to Children’s Medical Center in Dayton, where he died of collapsed lungs, according to Debbie Jones, the child’s grandmother. He was pronounced dead just after midnight.

She said her son was released from Miami Valley Hospital late Monday night.

She said the father and son were riding to a neighboring farm when the vehicle’s front wheel “popped” in a sharp turn when the vehicle hit a large, bulging rock.

“The ATV went one way, and they went the other,” she said.

Wayne Twp. Fire Chief Paul Scherer said ATVs are commonly used to get around on large acreage in the mostly farming community. He said it is important for ATV owners to be appropriately trained in their use and to wear helmets.

There have been two critical ATV accidents in the past couple of months, he said. “That’s two in our district in the last month and half.”

Sheriff’s Sgt. Corey Adams said this most recent case remains under investigation.
