DAYTON — A 2-year-old boy is in critical condition fighting for his life Thursday morning, July 29, at Children’s Medical Center of Dayton after falling two stories onto a concrete sidewalk.

Dayton police received the emergency call at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday. A squad car was only seconds away, and Officer Thomas Cope found the child laying on a sidewalk that ran along the side of the house at 810 Huffman. The child was not moving and his breathing was shallow and labored.

Cope comforted the child until emergency workers arrived. Kamarton Alston was rushed to Children’s where he underwent emergency surgery to relieve bleeding in his brain, according to police.

Once Kamarton was taken to the hospital, Cope noticed an open second-story window directly above where the child landed. At the hospital, Kamarton’s mother told Cope she had sent the boy upstairs to take a nap with two other children.

When she went upstairs to check on him, she found he was not with the other children. Checking another room, she noticed the open window, looked out and saw the child laying on the sidewalk.

Police are continuing their investigation.
