wo Wilmington residents were killed in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday on Interstate 71 near Fields Ertel Road in Warren County, according to state troopers.
Danica McLester, 19, of Wilmington was traveling north at about
4:06 a.m. in the right lane on I-71, just north of the Fields Ertel exit, in a 2005 Chrysler Concord when the vehicle went off the highway and struck a sign post, overturned and came back onto the road ejecting two rear passengers, according to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
McLester suffered serious injuries and was transported to University Hospital, according the press release.
The two rear passengers, Olivia French, 19, and Matt Shuttleworth, 18, were ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.
Neither of them were wearing seat belts, state troopers said.
Derrek Jones, 22, also of Wilmington was in the right front passenger seat of the vehicle. He sustained minor injuries and was transported to Bethesda North Hospital by ambulance, according to the release.
Hospital officials said Jones was being treated in the emergency room, but information about his condition was not immediately available.
I-71 northbound was closed for several hours as troopers investigated the accident.
The cause of the traffic crash remains under investigation and charges are pending, highway patrol officials said. They also said it is unknown at this time whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
