DAYTON — Bystanders pulled a man from a burning car Saturday after a three-car crash at the intersection of Woodman and Rainer ended when a car drove into a gas pump.
“Who knows if we’d have got there in time to do that,” said Capt. Vincent Wiley of the Dayton Fire Department. “Somebody stepped up and did the right thing and helped a man out.”
Officials said the rescued man possibly suffered a medical problem that caused him to collide with two other cars in the intersection about 12:30 p.m. Saturday. His car then crashed into a gas pump in front of a United Dairy Farmers store, sparking a fire that also burned another car, Wiley said.
The other car was pulled away from the pump and firefighters used foam to put out the fire, Wiley said.
The injured driver was listed in stable, but serious condition, and a small child injured in the crash was treated for minor injuries at Children’s Medical Center of Dayton, officials said. Neither victim was identified.
Other bystanders feared an explosion, but Wiley said emergency systems prevented ignition of gasoline in underground tanks.
