WAYNE TWP. — Two people are dead following a crash Friday night on U.S. 42 outside of Waynesville.
A Kia Spectra was struck by a Dodge Ram pickup truck shortly before 9 p.m. on U.S. 42, just north of Old 122 in Wayne Twp., according to the Lebanon Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.
The driver of the Kia, Sara Elswick, 20, of Waynesville, and passenger, Walter Woods, 23, of Waynesville, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the truck, Kenneth Dermer of Waynesville, and a 3-year-old boy were transported to Bethesda Arrow Springs Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
A preliminary investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol indicates Elswick traveling north on U.S. 42 when she lost control and slid sideways into the southbound lane.
Dermer was traveling southbound and hit the Kia in the passenger side.
Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have played a role in the crash, according to the highway patrol. Neither of the deceased were wearing safety belts.
The accident remains under investigation.
