Two men injured in industrial accident in Piqua

PIQUA — Two men doing maintenance on a machine were CareFlighted to Miami Valley Hospital in stable condition after being injured by a piece of machinery that fell on them at a Piqua business.

The accident was reported at 1:16 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 18, according to Capt. Brent Pohlschneider of the Piqua Fire Department.

Both men, ages 37 and 44, had injuries to their lower extremities following the accident at Jackson Tube Service, Inc., 8210 Industrial Park Drive, he said.

There were no amputations and no lacerations, but part of the heavy machinery was on the men’s extremities for a brief period of time, Pohlschneider said.

“We splinted them and gave IV fluids and stabilized them on backboards,” he said.

Workers at the plant, which makes tubing for frames on things such as motorcycles, by drawing steel through their machines, rigged up equipment to lift the machine part off the men before firefighters arrived, Pohlschneider said.

He said the Piqua Fire Department dispatched two medics and a heavy rescue vehicle to the scene but called in CareFlight to take the men to Miami Valley Hospital so they could be evaluated by an orthopedist for possible multiple fractures.

Regardless of why they were sent by CareFlight to MVH, I am glad they went. They are getting great care.

It's protocol. I am a medic in the area, and for trauma injuries, (which this would be classified) they MUST go to a trauma center. You would be threatened with discipline by the GVEMS board if they were taken to a non-trauma center. Alot of times the patients would do just fine, but protocol is written with the patients outlook in mind.

UMVC sucks thats why they took them somewhere else.... I had an accident and was taken to UVMC and then transfered to a hospital with a better doc. So in this case. Hell yeah, go where the medical team can better handle the issues.... hopefully it isnt bad. I worked at Jackson Tube for 3 years... Hope they are ok!

Well, by protocol (GMVEMSC) which Piqua is under, this would be a trauma, which needs to go to a trauma center! The only trauma centers we have in our area are: Atrium (Middletown) and Greene (Xenia) which are both level 3 and MVH which is a level 1 (Highest level). }PS: Not including Childrens, ped level 2}. If they had went to UVMC, they would have transferred them onto Miami Valley because of available trauma resources, such as surgeons, etc. After all, they have life threatening injuries!

It's possible that Upper Valley Medical Center (the closest hospital to Piqua) doesn't have the doctors and equipment necessary to give them the care they need, and CareFlight is the fastest way to get them to the bigger hospital.

One of the guys is my coworker's brother-in-law...prayers to the family.
