DAYTON — The University of Dayton is transforming part of West Stewart Street into a campus gateway.

Construction is underway on a streetscape project along West Stewart Street east of the Great Miami River. The landscaped boulevard and new identity signs will help define the entrances to the campus, said Rick Perales, the university’s director of campus planning.

“The new center boulevard, the decorative lighting, the signage and landscaping — even moving power lines underground will beautify this area of the city and provide a more distinctive gateway to the university,” Perales said.

The project also includes rebuilding the pedestrian-bicycle path on the south side of Stewart Street, he said.

Stone signs reading, “University of Dayton, Established 1850,” will mark the intersections of West Stewart Street and both South Main Street and South Patterson Boulevard, according to Beth Keyes, assistant vice president for facilities management.

The intersections also will feature flower beds, brick pillars and brick pavers, Keyes said.

The streetscape is part of the ongoing West Stewart Street reconstruction project. The city of Dayton is widening the street, and UD is doing the streetscape and aesthetic improvements, Perales said.

UD officials did not disclose the cost of the improvements.

Known as Campus West, the parcel of land between South Main Street and the Great Miami River is part of 50 acres of former NCR Corp. land that UD purchased in 2005.

The university is continuing to explore the best use of that land, Perales said.

The streetscape is scheduled to be completed in December to coincide with the re-opening of the Stewart Street bridge.
