DAYTON — A University of Dayton student has tested positive for “presumptive H1N1,” also known as swine flu, according to Dr. Mary Buchwalder, university medical director.
The new case reported Wednesday, Sept. 30, is the second incidence of H1N1 flu within the UD student body since the fall classes started Aug. 26.
The second student’s illness has not been confirmed as the H1N1 virus because the Ohio Department of Health is not doing H1N1 testing except for hospitalized patients and outbreaks being evaluated by local health departments, Buchwalder said.
“It is presumptive H1N1 since seasonal influenza A is unlikely in September,” she said.
The student lives in an apartment and is self-isolating, according to Buchwalder.
UD confirmed its first case of H1N1 on Sept. 15. That student self-isolated and recovered from their illness, Buchwalder said.
