DAYTON — The University of Dayton, like many private universities, has raised it tuition and fees each year for the last two decades.

Since the 1990-91 school year, the increases have ranged from 3.5 percent to 10.1 percent, according to university figures. Last year, UD raised its tuition and fees 5 percent.

Starting in August, annual undergraduate tuition and fees will increase from $28,690 to $29,930. The annual meal plan will rise from $3,460 to $3,560. The average annual housing cost will increase from $5,670 to $5,940.

In 1990-91, UD charged $8,550 in tuition and fees.

Graduate tuition and fees are expected to increase approximately 4 percent next year, but rates have not been set, spokeswoman Teri Rizvi said.

The decision to raise tuition and other costs next year comes at a time when UD is spending millions of dollars to improve and expand its campus.

On March 1, UD started construction on a new campus mall that will cost more than $2 million UD also is in the midst of a five-year, $42.5 million project to renovate campus residence halls.

In December, UD completed construction of a university gateway along West Stewart Street east of the Great Miami River. That same month, the university announced its acquisition of the former NCR Corp. headquarters building for $18 million.

The University of Dayton has increased its tuition and fees every year this century.
