The 2000 Dodge Caravan topped the list of stolen vehicles in Ohio for the second straight year, and vehicle thefts decreased in Dayton, mirroring a trend in the state and rest of the nation.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau released its list of the 10 most stolen vehicles in Ohio and the nation. The report examines vehicle theft data submitted by law enforcement to the National Crime Information Center and determines the vehicle make, model, and model year most reported stolen in 2010.

Dayton had 671 auto thefts in 2010, down from 775 a year before, the report said.

Most of Ohio’s large cities declined. Cincinnati was the exception, increasing by 44 vehicles to 1,607 total thefts.

The report said 2010 marked the seventh consecutive year Ohio auto thefts declined.

Nationally, vehicle thefts continue to decline. Preliminary 2010 FBI crime statistics point to a 7.2 percent reduction over the thefts posted in 2009. Should the preliminary numbers hold, 2010 will post the fewest vehicle thefts since 1967, the report said.

Certain models of older cars and trucks are popular with thieves because of the value of their parts. Newer, more expensive and insured vehicles are often stolen to be resold intact with counterfeit vehicle identification numbers or shipped out of the country, the report said.
