Volunteers for the Wayne Avenue Corridor cleanup Saturday didn’t need much in the way of tools.
All they needed was a screwdriver and gloves (optional) to clean out the weeds and trash in the cracks of the pavement.
“Someone will be along with a broom to sweep up,” Adam Coatney, chair of the project told them.
The Wayne Avenue Corridor project will create a lively, walkable area from the Oregon District to up-and-coming areas such as The Cannery.
Coatney said entertainment areas in larger cities succeed because they are close to each other.
Coatney mentioned a recent trip to Tampa and Ybor City where he was able to go to dinner, a martini bar and a club to dance, all on foot. He and other members of DaytonCREATE envision that for Dayton.
“This can be the start for a more expansive entertainment scene in Dayton,” Coatney said.
Coatney said the group is applying for a $2,000 mini grant that would be used to install lighting at the underpass and paint.
Tom Furey, a native New Yorker, moved to the area five years ago and now considers himself a Daytonian.
“I’ve lived in New York, L.A., Boston ... (Dayton’s) not any of those places and it doesn’t have to be.”
Furey is impressed with the friendliness of the Midwest and the Dayton art scene, calling it top tier. “New York arts are great but try to get a ticket. The arts here are phenomenal and accessible,” he said.
