DAYTON — The League of Women Voters of Greater Dayton wants residents to take a shot at reading the 1,018-page health care reform bill making its way through Congress as part of the annual Big Read event.
Designed to better inform voters, the Big Health Care Bill Read kicks off 6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 14, at Think TV, 110 S. Jefferson St., Dayton, where teams will be assigned 100 page chunks of the legislation, called America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009, to digest.
“The league promotes open discussion and exchange of ideas of substance, not chaos of misinformation and the overpowering of the opinions of others,” said Janis James, president of the board of the League of Women Voters Greater Dayton Area. “The Big Health Care Bill Read fits perfectly with the league’s mission to advocate voter education and action on issues. Action should bubble up from thoughtful study, and this provides citizens that opportunity.”
Experts will be on hand to help participants decipher the bill and teams will return to Think TV at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 to give a synopsis of their section and submit a list of questions for local lawmakers.
Anyone who wants to read the bill independently can visit reference sections of Dayton Metro Library branches; Greene County libraries; and Wright Memorial Public Library in Oakwood. Centerville/Washington Twp. libraries will help patrons access an online link to the bill.
