DAYTON — When families draw near for the holidays, sometimes they share more than the warmth and spirit of the season.
That’s one reason why local health officials want people to take advantage of free H1N1 flu vaccine clinics next week, the first ones scheduled for the general public.
“Think about who you’re going to be visiting during the holidays,” said Sara Pappa, spokeswoman for the Greene County Combined Health District, referring to children, people with compromised immune systems and others who are at higher risk for the flu.
Greene County will host H1N1 clinics from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Greene County Fairgrounds. That follows a clinic from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Hara Arena, 1001 Shiloh Springs Road, in Trotwood.
“This one is open to anybody, regardless of age or medical conditions,” said Bill Wharton, spokesman for Public Health — Dayton and Montgomery County.
Wharton said exceptions include people under 6 months of age and those with a history of flu vaccine reactions or whose physician advises against it.
Children under age 10 who received their initial H1N1 vaccination on or prior to Nov.16 are eligible to receive their second dose of the vaccine at the clinics. Two doses are required for this age group to be fully protected.
Also Monday and Tuesday, the Miami County Health District will host an H1N1 clinic from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the old Steve and Barry’s location in the Miami Valley Centre Mall in Piqua. And on Thursday, the Preble County health district will host a clinic from noon to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the county fairgrounds.
Additional information about upcoming H1N1 clinics can be found at phdmc.org or by calling the flu information line at 224-8796.
