Wright State University and the University of Dayton are among 14 universities designated as Ohio Centers of Excellence in biomedicine and health care.
Gov. Ted Strickland and Eric D. Fingerhut, chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, announced the centers Friday, Feb. 19, at BioEnterprise, a Cleveland-based organization designed to grow health care companies and commercialize bioscience technologies.
The 14 universities are committed to focusing their academic and research activities on biomedical and health care to create jobs in Ohio and further strengthen the state’s international reputation as a leader in bioscience research and development, according to state officials.
Ohio is home to 775 bioscience-related companies, including the headquarters of Cardinal Health and Procter & Gamble, two Fortune 500 companies.
UD was named as a center of excellence for Tissue Regeneration and Engineering.
The Wright State centers include BioHealth Innovation: Wright State University & Premiere Health Partners Neuroscience Institute; the National Center for Medical Readiness; and Knowledge-Enabled and Human-Centered Computing.
Other regional universities named Friday as centers of excellence include Miami University (Structural Biology and Metabonomics); Ohio State University (Health and Well Being, Human Behavior, and Bioinformatics), and Ohio University (Health and Wellness: From Translational Research to Best Practices for Rural/Underserved Populations).
The centers, as outlined in Ohio’s 10-year “Strategic Plan for Higher Education,” are intended to develop distinct missions for each institution, while eliminating unnecessary competition for resources, students and faculty within the state.
In October 2009, Strickland and Fingerhut announced Ohio’s nine Centers of Excellence in Advanced Energy at eight of the state’s universities, including UD and Central State University.
Additional centers are to be announced in the categories of transportation and logistics, agricultural and food production, and programs that are essential to building communities and attracting talent to the state.
