The City of Xenia was recently notified that it is one of six Ohio communities to receive a $50,000 grant from the State of Ohio from the newly-formed Brownfield Action Plan Pilot Program to create and implement a plan for a brownfield-impacted area of the city.
Xenia has identified an area roughly bounded from Galloway Street to Columbus Street and Second Street to Washington Street as the planning area.
This area, which is around Xenia Station, is referred to as the Hub District. The city has identified at least 12 potential brownfield sites.
The city will develop a plan for this 118-acre area, just south of the Central Business District. The area sits along the former railroads that once ran throughout the city and has a history of industrial uses.
A brownfield is defined as an abandoned, idled or under-used industrial or commercial property where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by known or potential release of hazardous substances or petroleum.
“We are pleased the State of Ohio recognizes the efforts the City of Xenia has made to address the redevelopment of older industrial areas and wants to help us to continue those efforts in other parts of the city,” Xenia City Manager Jim Percival said.
