Dayton police Sgt. sues department for gender discrimination

A Dayton police sergeant is suing the department for gender discrimination, according to federal court records.

Tonina Lamanna filed the suit against the Dayton police department in Dayton’s U.S. District Court.

The suit mentions “ongoing ordeals” over several years. They include not being hired to jobs in which she claims she was the most qualified and being asked inappropriate gender-related questions such as “what she would do if she got pregnant” and if she “felt she was strong enough to handle a canine.”

Lamanna served as a canine handler starting in January 2011. She also claims she was not promoted after she had the top score in November 2014 on the Police Sergeant civil service test - losing the job to a white male.

Lamanna was promoted to sergeant this year.
