Democrats target Sen. Portman for bad trade deals

Donald Trump isn’t the only one targeting trade deals that threaten American jobs.

Now, Dayton Democrats are joining in. Although they are blaming U.S. Sen. Rob Portman for the Central America Free Trade Agreement, which took effect 11 years ago this week. Portman was the U.S. Trade Representative for then President George Bush.

Montgomery County Democratic Party Chairman Mark Owens said CAFTA cost the Miami Valley a lot of jobs and Portman is to blame.

“Rob Portman bragged on national television that he quarterbacked the unfair trade agreement through Congress that would hurt working class Ohioans and working class people around the country,” Owens said.

On Monday Donald Trump, at a campaign rally in Columbus, blamed former President Bill Clinton for the North American Free Trade Agreement and the job losses that followed.

Michawn Rich, spokesperson for Portman for Senate campaign, sent this response via email:

“Ted Strickland and his allies are going to have to work harder to change the subject from his loss of major endorsements from the Ohio Conference of Teamsters and the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police. While Ted Strickland continues to make excuses, more than 100,000 union members are supporting Rob because he is the only candidate they can trust to stand up for Ohio’s working families and against China. Ted Strickland has the worst record of any senate candidate in American. Ohio simply cannot afford a return to Ted Strickland’s Ohio.”
