Drivers beware: Biggest week for back-to-school is here

The busiest week of back-to-school season starts today, as Huber Heights, Mad River and Trotwood-Madison schools are among those holding their first day of classes.

Two local school districts started last week (Miamisburg and Jefferson Twp.), but 22 of the 40 traditional public school districts in the Dayton area get under way this week.

Dayton Public Schools and many charter schools that use DPS’ busing kick off classes on Tuesday, after a potential teacher strike was solved late last week.

Others starting Tuesday include Oakwood, plus Catholic schools such as Alter and Fenwick high schools and St. Peter Elementary in Huber Heights. Lebanon is one of multiple school districts that has different grades coming back on different days, sometimes to help students adjust to a new school. Lebanon’s seventh and ninth graders go first on Tuesday.

Wednesday is the busiest day of all, as Beavercreek, Centerville, Kettering, Northmont, Xenia, Vandalia-Butler and several other districts get started. So do the Career Centers in Warren and Greene counties, as well as Dayton Christian, Carroll, and the Dayton Regional STEM school.

A handful of schools, including Springboro and Franklin, start Thursday, but one school that had planned to start Thursday has made a change.

Chaminade-Julienne High School has a not on their website saying that their schedule has changed due to construction delays. New students will now report for orientation day on Friday, while Monday, August 21 will now be the opening day for all.

Some schools still have another week of summer to enjoy though, as West Carrollton, Bellbrook, Troy and Fairborn are among the dozen-plus districts starting back next week.

Bethel, near Tipp City, is the only local school district going back after Labor Day, on Sept. 5.
