WASHINGTON TWP., Montgomery County — There are two candidates running for the Washington Twp. Board of Trustees on Nov. 8: incumbent Dale Berry and challenger Andrew Czyzewski.
Both candidates talked about what they see as primary concerns for the township, and how they would approach the role of trustee.
Dale Berry
Berry, 67, is a realtor with Irongate Realtors in Washington Twp. He has been a trustee for two years.
Berry said Washington Twp. has a very good staff, from the administrator to the department heads.
“The day-to-day operations of Washington Twp. are very efficiently run,” Berry said. “Of course, we as trustees are entrusted with overseeing those decisions, but that is not as important as the trustees being out in the community and close to its citizens.”
Berry said he is a longtime member of several area foundations and committees, from the Centerville-Washington Foundation to the Miami Valley Fair Housing Authority, and is involved with the community on a daily basis.
Berry has lived in the township for more than 40 years, and had two children go through Centerville City Schools.
“I have held this position since January 2009,” he said. “Professionally, I’ve never missed an Ohio Township Association meeting, and have been asked to represent the association on the Montgomery County land bank board.”
Land banks are intended to hasten the return of vacant and abandoned properties to productive uses.
Berry said state budget cuts and the elimination of the estate tax in 2013 is the township’s biggest challenge, and trustees will need to analyze each expenditure and make cuts wherever possible.
“We have always been very generous as far as things we’ve done in the community and for the community,” said Berry, citing the township’s annual business breakfast and dinner for volunteers, as well as the fact that the township does not charge Hithergreen Center rent. “We need to look at those things, as well as staffing, and see that we can do.”

Andy Czyzewski
Challenger Czyzewski, 40, is a customer service manager at the U.S. Bank in Springboro.
He said he believes his 21 years of banking experience can be an asset to the township, as it enters unprecedented financial times and faces loss of
revenue.
Czyzewski said doing more with less should be the guideline for the trustees.
“We should be reviewing some of the budget numbers in the township and be more cautious,” Czyzewski said. “We need to look at everything, and make smarter decisions.”
Czyzewski, who has lived in the township nearly two years, grew up in Toledo and lived in Harrison Twp. He went through the appointment process for trustee twice at previous locations, but has not held public office.
He said he is running for Washington Twp. trustee so he can make a positive impact.
“I am all about helping the community,” he said. “I think that’s the best thing that you can do.”
Czyzewski said he has been impressed by the work of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington Twp. Fire Department.
“Washington Twp. is a good place to live,” he said. “I feel comfortable in the community.”
