TROY — Former U.S. Senator and current Ohio attorney general candidate Mike DeWine will soon be able to pack heat.

“My wife and I are finishing up our course,” DeWine said on Saturday, March 27, at the Ohio Liberty Fair in Troy.

DeWine, a Cedarville Republican, said he and his wife are getting concealed carry permits once they finish the mandatory gun safety course.

If elected, DeWine said he will try to get reciprocity with other states, so they recognize Ohio’s concealed carry law, and he pledged support for individuals’ right to bear arms. He also pledged to fight the new federal health care bill on constitutional grounds.

DeWine will face Attorney General Richard Cordray, a Democrat, in the November election.

DeWine was one of several Republican candidates who spoke at the fair, which was co-sponsored by the Dayton Tea Party and the Miami County Liberty Group.

About 100 people listened quietly to DeWine’s short speech, but his almost-opponent, Steve Christopher, received standing ovations. Christopher, a Findlay attorney, said there is “no conservative” in the attorney general race. He claims that Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner did not forward all of his petition signatures to county boards of elections, keeping him off the ballot. Brunner says he did not turn in enough valid signatures.

Christopher said he chose to give up the fight after he was unsuccessful in getting the Ohio Supreme Court to allow him on the ballot.

He also attacked the new federal health care bill and federal government leadership.

“Our nation is currently controlled by socialists who are intent on stripping us of our prosperity and liberty,” Christopher said.

He accused Democrats of wanting to give amnesty to illegal aliens and “confiscate” people’s Individual Retirement Accounts and 401ks.

Conservatives are like sleeping dogs whose tails had been stepped on, said Christopher, “We’re mad and we’re ready to bite somebody.”

“We will fight for our freedom, and we will never surrender,” said Christopher, drawing another standing ovation from the audience.
