DAYTON — Montgomery County Board of Elections Director Steve Harsman called Tuesday’s election “a very big success” with minimal problems.

Harsman said he initially anticipated about 210,000 voters going to the polls, or about 55 to 56 percent of the county’s eligible voters. But about 9 p.m., he said that might be closer to 52 percent.

“When it is all said and done, that prediction still may come true, it’s just the early returns don’t look as heavy as we initially anticipated,” Harsman said.

More than 40,000 absentee votes were counted and more people chose touch-screen voting machines this year than in the 2008 presidential election.

The Ohio Secretary of State’s office had predicted a 52 percent voter turnout statewide, or an estimated 4.2 million voters.

Turnout was 56 percent in the 2006 gubernatorial election.
