State Sen. Jon Husted, R-Kettering, made his debut on the statewide ballot a resounding success on Tuesday, May 4, rumbling to victory over Sandra O’Brien for the Republican nomination for secretary of state.

The results were flipped for state Rep. Seth Morgan, R-Huber Heights, in his statewide debut. Delaware County Prosecutor Dave Yost crushed Morgan to win the GOP nomination for auditor.

With 87 percent of the precincts reporting, Husted led O’Brien, a former Ashtabula County auditor and 2006 GOP candidate for state treasurer, 68 percent to 32 percent, while Yost was winning, 64 percent to 36 percent.

Former Ohio House Speaker Husted, 42, said he was “honored” by the results and promised to work aggressively in the general election against Democrat Maryellen O’Shaughnessy, the Franklin County clerk of courts.

Morgan, 32, pledged his support for Yost, but he said the outcome was a “story of the bludgeon force” of the Ohio Republican Party’s financial support for his opponent.

Yost faces Democrat David Pepper, a Hamilton County commissioner, in the general election.

The state GOP, led by Chairman Kevin DeWine of Fairborn, endorsed Husted and Yost.
