SPRINGBORO — Scott Anderson and Kelly Kohls seem anxious to bring change to the Springboro Community City Schools.
During his campaign, Anderson has suggested the board adjust its policy so every student can participate in one extra-curricular activity without having to pay extra fees.
Kohls urged the board to consider reinstating high school busing, rather than just returning busing for kindergarten to eighth-graders during a discussion a few weeks before the election.
Both said they planned to carry through the mandate offered by voters who made them the top two vote-getters.
“We’re tired of things that are being done,” said Kohls said. “I am their voice.”
In a race for three spots, the final unofficial vote totals showed Kohls with 4,730, Anderson 4.291, board member Don Miller 3,884, board President Ira Thomsen 3,404.
In the past year, the board laid off 30 workers, closed Jonathan Wright Elementary and pushed pay-to-participate fees to $1,900 a family. Voters have rejected four consecutive levies. After the election, Miller indicated he hoped to return the district to previous service levels.
“I’m looking forward to another four years,” he said.
Kohls and Anderson have indicated they want to study the district’s finances and help restore confidence in the district before asking voters for a tax levy.
“The community will see change the first of the year. I’m excited,” Anderson said.
