SPRINGBORO — Michael Wolfe’s first run for elective office fell eight votes short of victory — less than one vote shy of the margin triggering an automatic recount — according to final results in the Nov. 3 election.
Wolfe lost to David Vomacka, 713 to 705, according to final results in Warren and Montgomery counties.
On Tuesday, Nov. 24, the Montgomery County Board of Elections verified election results, including those for parts of two Springboro City Council races otherwise in Warren County.
“If it would have been 7.9999 votes, we would not have recounted,” Keir Holeman, director of the Warren County Board of Elections, said on Tuesday. “There’s no provision in the law for saying, ‘Well, this is close enough.’”
Vomacka, a former councilman, and Wolfe, in his first run, were tied 629-629 in the precincts of the ward in Warren County, according to final unofficial results certified on Nov. 18.
In the Montgomery County section of the ward, Vomacka defeated Wolfe 84 to 76, the election board ruled Tuesday.
Candidates get automatic recounts when the margin of victory is less than one-half of one percent of the vote.
In Springboro’s 4th Ward, the Montgomery County results widened by three the margin of victory for Sheila Lairson over John Parise, 509 to 499.
Parise and Wolfe had talked of paying for recounts. However Holeman said they missed the filing deadline, on Monday, Nov. 23.
“Someone would have had to request one by yesterday afternoon,” he said.
