Huggy Lowdown was already a regional radio star in the Washington D.C.-area when he got called up to the big leagues in 2007 and joined “The Tom Joyner Show.” The comic, performing at The Funny Bone Comedy Club Friday through Sunday, Oct. 5 through 7, has the top feature on the nationally-syndicated radio morning program, which airs locally on WROU-FM (92.1).

“Going from a local radio to ‘The Tom Joyner Show’ was comparable of going from the And-1 (streetball) League to the NBA,” Lowdown said. “Since it’s syndicated it’s a bigger platform. I’m exposed to people all over the country as opposed to the DC-Maryland-Virginia-area where I’m originally from.”

Of course, a bigger platform brings increased pressure.

“It exposed me to new things,” Lowdown said. “My material had to be more universal as opposed to being localized. I had to step my writing game up. I’m a better comic because of the show because you’re forced to create new topical material daily.

“People can hear me for free every day so first and foremost I have to be funny every day to make people want to spend money to actually come see me,” he continued. “They’re going out of pocket and spending their hard-earned money so you have to bring 45-minutes to an hour’s worth of funny to keep people entertained.”

Lowdown is active on Twitter, which he says is an invaluable writing tool.

“You tend to be a little sharper and use less words,” he said. “It’s more direct and that helps with the writing process as well. It sharpens you up. I just want to learn more, pick up new things to add to my arsenal and keep evolving as a comic. You have to be well-read and well-versed in everything,” Lowdown added. “You try to absorb as much as you can so you can be knowledgeable about anything because you never know when you’ll need it.”
