Classical music
By Russell Florence Jr.
Contributing Writer
An abundance of orchestral, vocal and chamber performances are on tap for 2012-13.
In addition to emphasizing Beethoven’s five piano concertos featuring such pianists as Sara Davis Buechner and Grammy nominee Terrence Wilson, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra will notably present Rossini’s gorgeous “Stabat Mater” (featuring terrific soprano Adrienne Danrich of such Dayton Opera productions as “Don Giovanni” and “Porgy and Bess”), intimate evenings with pop singer Rita Coolidge, country singer Pam Tillis and jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli, a Broadway showcase with “Wicked” actresses Alli Mauzey (a knockout in Broadway’s short-lived “Cry Baby”) and Emmy winner Nicole Parker (“MADtv”), and an entertaining Rockin’ Orchestra Series appealing to fans of Michael Jackson, John Lennon, the Doors and the Beach Boys.
Dayton Opera offers Gaetano Donizetti’s tragic “Lucia di Lammermoor” (starring Angela Mortellaro), a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Richard Wagner complete with Act 1 of “Die Walkure,” Mozart’s lighthearted “The Marriage of Figaro” (starring Michael Sumuel), and a Mother’s Day Star Gala spotlighting celebrated mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe who will focus on the songs made famous by Kate Smith such as “God Bless America” and “Look for the Silver Lining.”
Devotees of Johann Sebastian Bach can count on the Bach Society of Dayton to deliver the goods once more, but Wright State University also taps into the composer’s fan base with pianist Sergei Babayan, whose Bach interpretations have garnered him international acclaim. Chamber ensembles can also be seen at WSU along with Chamber Music Yellow Springs, the Dayton Art Institute’s Vanguard Concerts and the University of Dayton’s Arts Series. The always eclectic UD Arts Series will also feature African and Cuban music as well as an intriguing symposium bridging heavy metal and globalization.
