Though he finished college only a few months ago, guitarist Lee Dynes is already cultivating a new crop of future jazz musicians. The Ohio native recently graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston and then went to California to be an instructor at a summer jazz camp.
“I’m having a blast teaching,” Dynes said. “The kids we’re working with are all highly talented and intellectual, and I think it’s comes from the surrounding culture. People in the community really make an effort to expose kids to jazz.”
During college, Dynes toured widely with his trio the Jazz Tellers, including several shows in the Dayton area. Now he’s part of the Acoustic Project with two other Berklee graduates. They’ve performed together in California, Massachusetts and Ohio and will appear at Spinoza’s in Beavercreek on Aug. 10, a Friday.
Amanda Addleman is a pianist, vocalist, composer and educator from the San Francisco Bay region. “We thought it would be a cool thing to bring Lee’s sound into my group,” she said. “He adds a more powerhouse solo with a completely different dynamic.”
The third member is David Goldenberg, a mandolin player who lives in Colorado. “He comes from an acoustic roots background,” said Dynes. “But at Berklee he studied a lot of jazz and contemporary music, and so his sound combines all of those elements.”
Now that he’s in a trio with a vocalist, Dynes’ role as a guitarist has changed in comparison to the Jazz Tellers. “With Amanda’s group, it’s more of a polished sound, so I try to restrain myself more,” he said. “When it comes my time to solo, I have the freedom to do whatever I want, but when she’s singing, I think the song should come across most.”
In an effort to attract a younger audience, the group’s repertoire combines traditional jazz tunes with hits by current artists such as Katy Perry and Kings of Leon. “I’m trying to keep jazz as a contemporary medium,” Addleman said. “I work hard to keep people interested in hearing jazz and at the same time giving homage to what was.”
