Annual Bike to Work breakfast postponed

DAYTON — The annual Bike to Work Day Pancake Breakfast scheduled for Friday, May 21, has been postponed because of the scrap yard fire about a mile from the Second Street Public Market, where the event was to be held.

Authorities have asked people within a two-mile radius to stay indoors because of possible toxic fumes that could be contained in the smoke from burning junked cars.

Sponsors of the pancake breakfast were expecting several hundred cyclists to show up between 6:30 and 9 a.m. for the free pancakes, sausages and beverages, said Beth Miller, director of marketing for Five Rivers MetroParks.

“Given the fact that the environment in which they’d be cycling might be compromised, we just didn’t feel it was appropriate for us to risk that,” Miller said. “The safety of the cyclists was the most important thing.”

The event has been rescheduled for next Thursday, May, 27, Miller said, same time, same place.

“You don’t have to register or anything,” she said. “Just bike on in.”

Miller said the weather, which is forecast to be wet Friday, didn’t play any part in the decision.

“We’ve done it rain or shine for several years,” she said. “Cycling advocates are pretty die-hard. They would have been there regardless.”

Afternoon Bike to Work Day events in Troy and Centerville are still a go, officials said. The Centerville event is from 4 – 6 p.m. at Washington Township Town Hall, 27 N. Main St. The Troy event is from 4 – 7 p.m. at Culver’s Restaurant, 2100 W. Main St.
