Indy’s newest zoo baby needs a name

The Indianapolis Zoo is letting the public help name its first zoo baby of the year — A creature that will grow several feet above its 6-foot birth height before its first birthday.

The male, reticulated giraffe was born Jan. 9 weighing 158 pounds and is the sixth calf for its 18-year-old mother Takasa, according to a release from the Indianapolis Zoo.

The ”spirited newcomer stood up and began nursing soon after birth,” according to the release.

He will debut with his family in the spring, but the zoo will be asking the public to help name him.

Zoo Spokeswoman Carla Knapp said the staff will be brainstorming to come up with a few names for the newcomer, an appelation appropriate for its personality and its native land of Sub-Saharan Africa.

The public will then have an opportunity to vote on the best name through a poll soon to be posted on the zoo’s Facebook page.
