JUST IN: Brown Street restaurant closes temporarily

A restaurant along the busy Brown Street corridor near the University of Dayton has shut down temporarily for renovations and a transition to new ownership.

The owner of The Gyro Room at 1124 Brown St. has sold the business to the Gyro Palace, which operates a restaurant at 57 S. Springboro Pike in Miamisburg at the corner of Ohio 725 and Ohio 741.

Gyro Palace captured third place in the Dayton.com Best of 2017 awards that were announced last week in the category of “Best Mediterranean/Greek Dining,” and it also operates a popular food truck serving gyros and other Greek specialties.

“I’ve decided to move back home to New Jersey, and sold the business,” Gyro Room owner John Hanna told this news outlet. Hanna also operated the Kala Greek Grill in West Chester, Ohio from 2011 to 2014.

The restaurant will reopen as a second location of the Gyro Palace after renovations, Gyro Palace owner Mohamed Redha said. Adding ventilation and equipment to allow the restaurant to cook french fries and other fried foods are a part of the renovation, Redha said.

“We had been looking at different locations over the years for a second place,” Redha said. “This was a good fit for us.”

Plans call for the new Gyro Palace to open in March, “if everything goes smoothly,” the restaurant’s owner said.

The space previously housed Greek House sportswear and Tropical Tan.
