Video-game roundup: best new releases

By Omar L. Gallaga

This week, we’re taking a look at some new and noteworthy video-game releases.

“Dishonored.” An ambitious-looking shooter from Austin-based Arkane Studios (now owned by a division of Bethesda Softworks) combines the supernatural with the technological in an Industrial Age setting. It appears a bit like “BioShock” but with more stealth play and amped-up art design. Buzz for this one has been building since it made a good showing at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo. Rated M for Mature. $60, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

“XCOM: Enemy Unknown.” The classic strategy PC game “X-COM” gets rebooted in this alien invasion fantasy from some of the team behind “Civilization.” In addition to turn-based gameplay, the game also features ground combat and more action than the original. Rated M for Mature. $50-$60 for Xbox 360, PS3 and Windows PC.

“Resident Evil 6.” The world of “Resident Evil” expands in a big way in this globe-trotting horror survival game that takes place in North America, Europe and China, and which is played from the view of several main characters. The game contains a single-player campaign as well as online and offline co-op, vehicle action, Mercenaries mode and an unlockable campaign featuring fan-favorite character Ada Wong. And, to make things scarier, there are new zombies who can now run, jump and use weapons. Prepare to be terrified. Rated M for Mature. $60-$90 in Standard and Special Editions, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

“NBA 2K13.” The very well-regarded 2K Sports NBA dynasty continues with this new edition, which adds Kinect support for the Xbox 360, signature player skills, a revamped passing system as well as the 1992 and 2012 Olympic Dream Teams. The game’s executive producer? The ever-busy Jay-Z, who produced the soundtrack and had a hand in overseeing menus, artwork and game mechanics. Rated E for Everyone. $20-$100 in various Standard and Dynasty Editions. Available for Xbox 360, PS3, Nintendo Wii, Sony PSP and Windows PC.
